Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What Is SEO? – It’s Simpler Than You Think!

SEOThe common misconception is that you make sure your site really beautiful, get it listed on all relevant search engines- (and there are a number although Google is the clear leader)- and people will visit. This is the “Field of Dreams” concept-build it and they will come. They won’t! The fastest way to a deflated ego is to do just that.

Disillusionment soon sets in when you’ve spent thousands on building a really cool site just to have it sit there with no visitors (traffic). So, how do we get people to notice us and give us some love? To get noticed we need to rank-but to rank we need to be noticed-Catch 22.It’s a bit like talented actors being told to come back when they’ve got some experience, but to get experience they need to get the job.

OK-we need to do some work!

How Do I Make My Site Appear in Search Results?

Authority and relevance are the two primary factors which determine how well a site ranks in the search engine of choice when a search query is entered. A search query is called a “keyword” even if it’s a phrase not just a single word- e.g.: “Fat loss diet” is a keyword. Relevance is measured by analysing page content, the copy we use on our site, and authority is generally measured based on the quality and the number of other pages linking to it. These are called “backlinks” and are, in effect “votes” for your content. So, the more popular the stuff you write is, the more votes you receive. Very democratic!

Buy now you’ve probably drawn the conclusion that it’s a bit more involved than just building an attractive website. You have to create the kind of site the search engines will show in search results. How??- Well the formula is simple-(told you it was simple): Valuable Content + Quality Backlinks = Search Engine elevation!

What criteria does Google use to Rank Pages?

Google’s job is to deliver relevant content to its audience, so it promotes pages that tick all of its algorithm’s boxes to the top of its rankings. It’s your job to create pages which Google perceives as authoritative. Put simply this is writing great content and building a forest of other sites that like your stuff and link back to you, so you’ve widened your audience. Like the scenario earlier the more people who love you the greater the momentum. The Snowball effect is in play once you get the ball rolling.

In simple terms SEO means writing pages that use keywords or keyword phrases. These are the things people write in the search box, and the next step is getting links from other sites to show how important your page is in comparison to others. Back-links are the “votes” that help you win the election and put you on page one…

An easy guide to achieving better Search Results:

Write copy that includes the words and phrases used by people who search for your product
Get others to look at and like your writing- back-linking.(Guest blogging is a great way to do this)
Rinse and Repeat!
If there was ever an industry that was little understood by ‘outsiders’ it’s Search Engine Optimisation. It’s not a black art or a religion; it’s a logical, but sometimes tedious, process.

The purpose of SEO is to ensure a website can be found in the various search engines for words and phrases (Keywords) which are relevant to the site’s purpose.

Some SEO service providers will try and blind you with science and confuse you into thinking it’s a mysterious and unique formula closely guarded by the Illuminati-utter nonsense! Talk to some companies about SEO and after an exhausting pitch you’ll be none the wiser.

At TMG we won’t confuse and confound you. We believe in explaining things in layman’s terms so our clients get it. We want you to know what we are doing for you, and why, so you can see value in the process.

You talk about links as very important how do I get them?

Backlinks are important but quality rather than quantity is the key to success. A dozen or so links from relevant, respected (i.e.: they have Page Rank and authority) sites to your article will have a far higher meaning to Google than a 1000 low value links which are commonly sold by lots link building companies out there. I’d say if a company offers you a large number of links for a low price, which looks like really great value; it’s almost certainly a scam, or spammy worthless links.

Go out and build links from authority high PR sites so the endorsement is worth having. The beauty of this is that high quality writing and information is rewarded with high quality backlinks so it knocks the spammers out of the game
